September is National Suicide Prevention Month—a time for communities, families, and organizations across the country to come together, raise awareness, and support those who may be struggling. It’s a reminder that every life matters and that even the smallest act of kindness or compassion can make a difference.

Why Awareness Matters

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, yet it is often surrounded by stigma and silence. Many people who are struggling don’t reach out for help because they feel ashamed or believe no one will understand. By speaking openly and compassionately about mental health, we break down those barriers and let people know they are not alone.

How You Can Show Support

This month—and every month—there are simple but powerful ways to show support:

  • Start the conversation. Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues. A simple, “How are you really doing?” can open a door.

  • Share resources. Familiarize yourself with hotlines, text lines, and community resources so you can offer help when needed.

  • Listen without judgment. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is simply be present and listen.

  • Promote self-care. Encourage healthy habits, stress management, and seeking professional support when needed.

  • Raise awareness. Share facts, stories of hope, or supportive messages on social media to help others feel less alone.

Resources You Can Share

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – Dial or text 988 to connect with trained crisis counselors, available 24/7.

  • Crisis Text Line – Text HELLO to 741741 to connect with a trained counselor.

  • Veterans Crisis Line – Dial 988, then press 1 to reach support for veterans and service members.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

National Suicide Prevention Month is about more than awareness—it’s about action, compassion, and hope. Every conversation matters. Every resource shared matters. Every life matters.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that help is available. You are not alone, and your story is not over.
